Power Source
This timepiece features an in-house, Swiss-made Automatic movement with a gorgeous Cartier Calibre 1904 MC engine. This “Manufacture Cartier” engine was debuted in the latter end of 2013 and is a thin caliber automatic featuring 27 jewels. The precision is of the best quality and with a power reserve of 48 hours, you can go a couple of days without worrying about having to rewind this beauty.
The Good
As any good diver’s watch should have, this Calibre de Cartier has luminous features on the dial hands as well as the markers. This is important when diving, as you well know that sunlight fades quickly. The Roman Numerals, minute/second indexes, and the two main dial hands feature this luminescence specifically for superior diving use, but is perfect for nighttime use as well.
The 18kt Rose Gold bezel with black features is a seriously attractive feature that makes this timepiece fly. The unidirectional bezel is notched for easy gripping while underwater and the front face of the bezel features black with white Arabic Numerals, indexes, and other markings for practical use.
A very unique part of this Cartier is the screw down crown, also made of 18kt Rose Gold – while the screw down functionality aids in superior water resistance, the crown itself is octagon shaped with a blue faceted, synthetic spinel that is gorgeous.
In a side view, you can see the black ADLC coated case and how the Rose Gold of the notched bezel, the octagonal crown, and the small screws highlight this accent feature in a classic and Cartier fashion.
The design of the black watch face is particularly impressive. With a calendar window at 3 o’clock which shows today’s date as well as the previous date and tomorrow’s day, this is not your typical one-number display window.
The combination of the black dial, white Roman Numerals and indexes, Rose Gold-tone hands, and the accent Rose Gold-tone around the 6 o’clock subdial and calendar window, makes this design stand out from the crowd.
For ease of use, there are only two main dials — the hour and minute, with a lone sub dial at 6 o’clock, which acts as the second hand with its own 60 second dial.
The Bad
While there are no real negative aspects to this timepiece design- or function-wise, it would have been nice to see Cartier raise the bar a bit more in terms of power reserve. This is such an excellent timepiece, that a 72 hour power reserve that one would see in a Rolex would make this diver’s watch absolutely perfect.
With that being said, the power reserve of 48 hours is actually longer than the norm, which is usually around 42 hours. Therefore, Cartier has certainly included superior materials and functionality all the way around in this Calibre de Cartier and with a lack of any negative points, this watch is near perfect.
Highlights
While many luxury pieces use PVD coating on their stainless steel, PVD is actually more sensitive to scratches and can even wear off. Cartier makes this diver’s watch quite durable in that they coat their stainless steel in a black ADLC coating. ADLC (amorphous diamond-like carbon) is applied at a temperature of 392 degree Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius) and is a much harder coating than PVD or untreated stainless steel.
ADLC is a carbon-based coating that is ideal for scratch-resistance and impact-resistance as well as the incredible nobile-black metallic look it provides. In combination with the scratch resistant Sapphire crystal and the solid ADLC backing, this diver’s watch is not messing around — it is ready to be used as advertised and is much more durable than most diver’s watches.
The water resistance, is definitely one of the stars of the show. With a water resistance of 300 meters (1,000 feet), this automatic is a true diver’s watch and can withstand use during swimming, snorkeling, showering, scuba diving, and more. Considering that the strap is made from a wonderfully rugged but classy rubber strap, you can use this timepiece wherever you go.
Functionality
The functionality of this timepiece is outstanding. Considering the relatively low price of this luxury watch, I have seen timepieces that are twice or three times the cost and do not provide such detailed design and well thought-out quality materials as this Cartier.
While Cartier may be known foremost for their beauty, they have proven themselves in the functionality of their diver’s watches, which are beyond reproach. With superior water resistance, high quality case and crystal materials and construction, as well as accent designs and functions, this Calibre de Cartier men’s timepiece is one of the best examples of a perfect luxury sports-geared watch I have ever seen.
Not only does it have all of the functionality it requires, and more, but Cartier took such care with the design, the details, and the little things such as Rose Gold accenting of not just the bezel, but of the octogonal screw in crown and the small screws in the black ADLC coated steel case.
Price
This beautiful Cartier retails for $11,300, but you can find it at respectable online retailers for around $8,500 to $9,500.
