ZIIIRO’s new Lunar watch for the non-werewolf crowd

A moonphase complication is neat, but unless you’re a Howard man, it’s not much use. ZIIIRO’s new Lunar watch uses the concept of the lunar phase for a more practical purpose: telling time.

I’m reminded immediately of the MJW Colour Venn, another fun piece that uses circles to give an accurate if confusing view of the time. The Lunar uses two disks spinning clockwise at different rates to show the hours and minutes. The past is bright white; the future is shrouded in darkness.

ZIIIRO has a whole line of watches that tell the time with dots or gauges or colored lines—mostly anything but a traditional set of hands. It’s a refreshing break from the violent monotony of sticks and swords and arrows that define traditional horology.

There is a certain type of person—and maybe a certain mood in all of us—that needs a watch like this or the MJW Colour Venn. It’s a less precise, more free-spirited, happy-go-lucky approach to style and time keeping.

The Lunar is still a pretty serious watch, with a quality Miyota Quartz movement inside a 41 mm x 9.8 mm brushed stainless steel or matte black PVD case. The crown quite slickly disappears inside the case until it is needed, when you can reach a fingernail under the case to pop it out (much like the MJW Colour Venn). Black leather or stainless mesh keeps it in orbit on your wrist. ziiiro.com
