Apple Watch Series 1 gets revamped with low price and better processor

The new Apple Watch has officially arrived as the Apple Watch Series 2, but that doesn’t mean Cupertino’s forgotten about its first-gen smartwatch.

The original Apple Watch is being rebranded as Series 1 with prices starting at $269 for the 38mm paired with a Sport Band, or $299 for the 42mm.

There’s no longer a stainless steel option, so you’re stuck with aluminium if you go for Series 1.

The watch will have the S2’s dual-core processor, but not the 50 meter water resistance nor the built-in GPS or brighter screen. It will be getting the watchOS 3 update, however, which lands 13 September.

For $100 less than the newer smartwatch, it makes sense there would be fewer features for the Series 1 – but a faster processor isn’t too bad.

Apple’s also done away with its $10,000 gold Watch, which has been replaced with the new ceramic Edition that starts at a more-reasonable $1,249.

Pre-orders for both the Apple Watch Series 1 and 2 start on 9 September and both will be available from 16 September.
