Unique jewellery inspired by the world’s most historic landmarks

By Åse Anderson

From modern architectural wonders to ancient monuments, world famous landmarks have been transformed into some of the season’s most memorable and unique jewellery.

If you have walked down the streets of the charming Parisian neighbourhood of Montmartre, Ivanka Trump’s jewellery collection of the same name will resonate with you. In gold and diamonds, the jewels mimic the cobblestone paths in this historic district, which has long been a haven for artists and bohemians.

The latest installment of Cartier jewellery from the Paris Nouvelle Vague collection also pays homage to Paris with fine jewellery inspired by a stroll through the French capital that takes in the River Seine and the iconic Pont des Arts bridge. One bracelet is an homage to the tradition of lovers attaching padlocks to the bridge, with amethysts, aquamarines, tourmalines and spinels swinging freely from a latticework of pink gold.

If you’re longing for the lush surrounds of New York’s Central Park, this emerald ring from Harry Winston recreates the park’s sweeping lawns with the help of a 2.13ct emerald surrounded by diamonds. The American designer’s New York fine jewellery collection captures the glamour and energy of Manhattan, where the brand has been based since 1932.

A David Morris cocktail ring conjures up images of the more exotic environs of the Taj Mahal in India. This beautiful monument is one of the Wonders of the World, and the Taj ring, with its round brilliant-cut centre stone surrounded by pink, purple and white diamonds, references the bulbous, 115-foot-tall marble dome. For a different and more colourful perspective on the iconic Taj Mahal, the Pasquale Bruni rings from the Italian jeweller’s Lady Taj collection reconstruct the majestic dome with irregularly cut gemstones.

A more modern architectural wonder is the inspiration behind Roberto Coin’s Golden Gate fine jewellery collection. These strikingly modern jewels include a sculptural yellow gold ring with an intricately woven pattern that resembles the cables of San Francisco’s iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

The instantly recognisable silhouette of Sydney’s Opera House is preserved in bejewelled form in the Mattia Cielo Armadillo ring, with layered domes of white gold and diamond pavé. Regularly compared to its spiky namesake as well as Australia’s most famous landmark, the dynamic design allows the gold and gemstones to open and close on the finger.
