Anchors and Rainbows

I like to keep an eye out for “Fashion Repeats Itself” moments, so I was pleased that Vanessa Friedman of the New York Times pointed out the anchor wedges at the recent Thom Browne runway show.

But a tip of the hat goes to my designing friend Stacy Lomman, who alerted me to Vanessa’s tweet. Stacy remembered my anchor wedges by Castelbajac from a few years ago.

Obviously, the two pairs of shoes are entirely different looking, but it isn’t every day that I get to write “anchor wedges,” so let me have my moment.

Separately, I was surprised to spot this suede,  rainbow-ish, asymmetrical jacket on 1stdibs.com.

The jacket is identified as being from the 1980s. I’d guess very late ’80s, because Thierry Mugler’s iconic rainbow jacket is from his Spring/Summer 1990 collection. It just so happens that there’s also one of these on 1stdibs.

I have a feeling that this is more of a Fashion Copies Itself moment than a Fashion Repeats Itself moment, but it’s still interesting. The Mugler piece is infinitely more beautiful, of course. Putting the photos of the jackets together reminded me of my Goofus/Gallant post about wedding cakes: You can’t even compare the work. You can, however, compare prices and the suede version is bargain $175, while the museum-worthy Mugler is $11,500.
