Asus confirms 11 July ZenWatch 3 Android Wear 2.0 update

Update: Asus has confirmed that the ZenWatch 3 will get the Android Wear 2.0 update on July 11. The ZenWatch 2 update will be released in two waves, the first in July and the second end of July/beginning of August.

Update 2: Asus has now released the update – a day later than July 12. But hey, they said it would be May.

The saga of the update to Android Wear 2.0 is almost over, but it seems the new software is still missing in action for Asus smartwatch users.

Those waiting for their ZenWatch 2 and ZenWatch 3 smartwatches to get the delights of Google’s latest update have been left bemused, as release dates of April and May have come and gone.

Android Police is now reporting that the “1.63-inch ZenWatch 2 would get 2.0 in July, and the 1.45-inch would get it in August” from tweets from the official German Asus Twitter account.

It also cites a now-deleted tweet that the ZenWatch 3 update could arrive “in the coming weeks”.

The ZenWatch range has been a popular line-up of smartwatches, and the update will give them a new lease of life, with features such as standalone apps and improved notifications. However, as neither ZenWatch has NFC, Android Pay won’t make the cut.

Asus has been one of the slowest brands to give its Android Wear devices the latest update, with just the Moto 360 Sport the only outstanding major release, other than the Sony SmartWatch 3 and first-gen LG Watch, which are not slated to get it.
