Extended Apple Watch warranty could now give you a free repair

Apple has extended the warranty of the original Apple Watch for three extra years from the original purchase date, meaning users who suffer any setbacks may be entitled to a free repair.

The new service policy from the Cupertino giant relates to an issue whereby the charging area of the smartwatch detaches from the body due to weak adhesive. The issue appears to be widespread, with Apple’s hand likely forced by a wave of similar complaints.

The company’s warranty period usually extends for a year, though the change is reportedly set to to cover original Apple Watch’s Sport, Edition and Hermès models. And while it’s only now been realised, the extended warranty has, in fact, been in effect since last year.

So, who does this apply to? Well, if you bought an Apple Watch back in the heady days of June 2015 and are now having trouble, for example, you’re still in line for a free repair until June 2018. Simples.

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a warranty extension placed upon the Apple Watch, with swollen battery issues covered after a string of related issues earlier this year. We’ve also seen it within Apple’s other stable of products — the iPad Pro’s Smart Keyboard saw further cover due to a persistent fault.

For those rocking the original version of the watch with a loose charging disc, it’s probably time you looked into receiving some support from Apple and its Genius folk.
