A Coveted Candle Line Branches Out into Personal Perfumes

The tastefully designed, subtly scented candles of Maison Louis Marie continue to draw distinguished noses to the doorsteps of fashionable outposts like Fred Segal in Los Angeles and Assembly in New York, and all the Steven Alan stores across the country in between. And today, the Belgian behind the brand, Marie du Petit Thouars, introduces her first collection of personal fragrance oils, four of which borrow the delicate bouquet of some of her most coveted candles, and one of which is being introduced for the first time. “Each scent from my collection represents a person, place or memory of my family and childhood that is created through blends of notes that utilize vast arrays of the botanical world,” she says. Another of her dearest childhood memories inspired her to create the oils, four of which are unisex, in the first place. “I remember when I was a child, I went on a fishing trip in the Mauritius Islands with a master perfumer from the Guerlain family,” she says. “He had created a perfume inspired by a woman with whom he had fallen in love with and wanted to reveal her sensuality through a perfume. I was absolutely charmed by this — what a beautiful gift to be able to give someone.”

Here, the actress Grace Gummer stars in a video, directed by Jacqueline DiMilia, that captures the dreamlike effect of one of the scents, Bois de Balincourt.
