A wonderful world of colourful tropical jewellery for the height of summer

By Åse Anderson

This summer, bask in the heat of tropical-inspired fine jewellery that conjures up images of lush rainforests, deep blue seas and palm trees gently swaying in the breeze.

Inspired by the designer’s native Brazil, Carla Amorim jewellery is imbued with a bright, confident spirit reminiscent of her country’s exotic fauna and colourful carnivals. Born in Brasilia, Carla Amorim has been creating fine jewellery under her own name since 1993 and is renowned for her liberal use of coloured gemstones, from sapphires and emeralds to tourmalines and tanzanites. Bright green tsavorites and a smattering of black diamonds provide a beautiful contrast to the white gold in this Carla Amorim ring from the O Meu Caminho collection, while large, oval-shaped orangey yellow cornelians resembling ripe fruit dangle seductively from a pair of earrings from the same collection.

Turquoise jewellery is a perennial summer favourite, and the blues and greens in these wonderful earrings by Italian designer Corrado Giuspino bring to mind the colour of a tropical sea lapping gently against the white sands of a palm-fringed island.

The dramatic hues of the Amazon River are brought to life in the new collection from Jewellery Theatre The Rainforest ring draws in the eye with a spectacular 44.09ct amethyst surrounded by black diamonds and tsavorites.

Lalique jewellery has its roots in the Art Nouveau period, when designs often featured natural motifs such as flowers, birds and animals. The Perroquet collection, launching this autumn, continues the tradition of the legendary René Lalique with pieces inspired by parrots. Depicted in coloured stones, including blue, orange and pink sapphires as well as Paraiba tourmalines and emeralds, the exotic bird perches on a gold ring and wraps itself gently around a finger, while its elegant wings flutter elegantly from necklaces and earrings.

The spirituality and rich heritage of Africa runs through Almasika jewellery, which launched its debut collection at Colette in Paris this year. Designed by former De Beers PR manager Catherine Sarr, the collection is inspired by her childhood trips to Benin in West Africa. The cowry shell that has been worn as a talisman by many different African kingdoms is recreated in bejewelled form in the Le Cauri Endiamanté collection.

Regardless of where your travels take you this year, these tropical jewels are a timely reminder of the awe-inspiring and colourful world that we live in.
