The best red carpet jewels of 2015

We’re nearing that time of year again when Hollywood rolls out the red carpet and presents its awards for the most outstanding performances and movies of 2015. What better time then to look back and nominate our favourite red carpet jewellery of the past year.

Actress Cate Blanchett wearing an aquamarine, diamond and turquoise necklace from Tiffany & Co’s latest Blue Book collection to the 87th Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

The red carpet is a place of nostalgia, fantasy and glamour – gone are the days of stepping out in formal dresses, twinsets and perfectly coiffed hair. When asked to come up with my favourite red carpet looks, I immediately thought of Cate Blanchett’s Tiffany necklace that bedazzled at the Oscars. With her customary assured style, she let her modern bib of turquoise, aquamarine and diamonds from Tiffany’s Blue Book collection do the talking, pairing it with a simple Maison Margiela black column gown.

Harking back to the glory days of the silver screen was Margot Robbie. She appeared at the Oscars in a beautiful Van Cleef & Arpels necklace. An iconic design and feat of engineering first created in the 1950s, zip necklaces are rarely seen on the red carpet. It was perfection on Robbie though, who combined hers with a plunging neckline, perfect complexion and a red lip. Gwyneth Paltrow went for earrings and colour contrast. She wowed the crowds with the deep red of her rubellite Anna Hu earrings against the blush pink of her Ralph & Russo gown.

At the Golden Globes, Naomi Watts once again demonstrated her love for Bulgari jewellery. She brightened up the red carpet in a diamond-encrusted Serpenti necklace with a yellow Gucci gown, giving her look a welcome dose of glamour puss.

Jessica Chastain added a pop of colour to her golden Givenchy gown at the 2015 Met Gala with a pair of Art Deco-inspired Piaget ruby earrings.

Meanwhile, at the Cannes Film Festival, Léa Seydoux made a case for statement earrings. She personified French chic in a high neck Miu Miu gown in the palest blue, contrasted with the deep blue sapphires and diamonds of her gorgeous, shoulder-grazing Chopard earrings.

With her dramatic mane of red hair, Jessica Chastain is one of the finest proponents today of silver screen glamour. She channelled old-school style at the Met Gala in May with a Givenchy mermaid gown and 1940s side-swept hair – all the better for drawing the eye to the stunning rubies of her Art Deco-inspired Piaget earrings.

Finally, Maggie Gyllenhaal showed this year that sometimes less is more – even when it comes to red carpet jewellery. At the SAG Awards, the nominee proved her style assuredness, pairing the simple silhouette of her plunging white Thakoon gown and customary crop with beautiful Victorian gold earrings from Fred Leighton, with not a jaw-dropping gemstone in sight.
