My Best Dressed at the 2016 Hip Hop Honors

VH1 had an annual Hip Hop Honors telecast from 2004 to 2010 to recognize “the luminaries who broke new ground and propelled the [hip hop] genre into the cultural phenomenon it has become.” I’m not sure why the network stopped doing it, or why the show was resurrected tonight, because the theme was “All Hail the Queens so I approve.”

Michelle Obama made an appearance via pre-recorded video, and Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah and Lil’ Kim were special honorees (my girl Gangsta Boo had her picture up on the wall, though she wasn’t there in person). As for fashion, I’m going to give a best-dressed shout-out to singer Faith Evans, who was wearing a very sex-ay navy-blue tuxedo.

I keep adding an imaginary crown to that outfit because Faith is a true queen for introducing the Lil’ Kim tribute. You see, Faith is the widow of the rap icon known as the Notorious B.I.G., while Lil’ Kim was Biggie’s protégé … and girlfriend. It’s been 19 years since Biggie was killed in a still-unsolved drive-by shooting, so I guess everything is now very civilized. Or crazy. Or crazily civilized. Either way, I like it, and Faith looked great. Navy was the right choice for that red hair.

Kim, of course, can never, ever top her 1999 MTV VMAs outfit.

MrB and I were there in person that year, and MrB is STILL talking about the moment when Diana Ross reached out and gave Kim’s free-range boob a jiggle.
